Revitalizant and the coating
What it is, how it works, what the layer is like
What is revitalizant?
Revitalizant is an additive for lubricants (gels, greases, oils) containing nanoparticles of a patented formula.

A revitalizant particle is built like a pomegranate: its active particles (1), 2–20 nm in size, are the “grains”. The binding phase (2) keeps them from touching each other. The hardness of the active particles is about 8–9 on the Mohs scale, and they are stronger than the binding phase.
D is the controlled size of the revitalizant particle for different applications: 100–500 nm.
What is revitalization?
Revitalization is the interaction of revitalizant with friction surfaces while machines are running.
Revitalizant modifies (changes) the structure of part surfaces as they work, restores them and protects them from wear, extends service life and reduces friction losses.
It is the nanoscale size of revitalizant particles that links the interaction of friction surfaces in an engine at the atomic level to the macro effect: modified surfaces and longer service life.
What makes revitalizant unique is that it can return worn metal particles from the oil directly to the surfaces of rubbing parts! With revitalizant, instead of the usual wear we get restoration.
What conditions does revitalization need?
- 01
Metal-on-metal friction
Metal surfaces touch directly: the active component builds a protective layer where there is micro-deformation and wear.
- 02
Lubricant or fuel
Carries the active particles to the surfaces and supplies the carbon for the crystal lattice of the metal-ceramic.
- 03
Closed friction cycle
Oil circulates, gear teeth and raceways come into contact again and again, so active particles keep reaching the friction zone.
Can I learn more about revitalization?
The process is shown step by step in the interactive model; measurements and sources are collected in the research section.
What is the metal-ceramic coating?
It looks like a smooth glassy surface. Physically it is metal strengthened with metal carbides and carbon. The carbon content peaks at the surface, turning it into a diamond-like structure.
Revitalization achieves almost perfect hardening of rubbing parts, the key to a longer service life: an extra-strong surface layer on a metal base.

DataMicrohardness
How thick is the metal-ceramic coating?
What makes revitalization unique is that it is not just about atomic layers but about real microns on the plungers of fuel injection pumps, several hundredths of a millimetre in an engine's cylinder-piston group, and tenths of a millimetre in industrial gearboxes¹.
Can the metal-ceramic layer peel off in service?
The metal-ceramic layer cannot peel off in service. During revitalization, metal and metal carbides diffuse into each other to a depth of 10–30 µm¹.
There is no sharp boundary between the original surface and the metal-ceramic, so there are no conditions for cracks to form or for the metal-ceramic layer to peel off.
Metal carbides diffuse into the metal to a depth of 10–30 µm¹: the metal-ceramic coating merges into the base metal without a sharp boundary.

Effect and results
Compression and power, fuel, emissions, oil analysis, how long it lasts
How can engine wear and oil effectiveness be assessed?
For many years, professionals who service heavy trucks have judged engine wear and condition by analysing used oil. The leading laboratories in this field are Oelcheck in Europe and Blackstone in America.
Along with key oil parameters such as viscosity, detergency and contamination, the amount of metallic wear products is measured. Which metal it is and how much of it is in the oil show whether the engine is wearing and which unit. For example, iron most often points to the cylinder-piston group, copper and lead to the crankshaft bearings, and so on.
We take a professional approach to assessing revitalizant: used-oil analyses show its real effectiveness, as the metal content of the oil goes down when it is used.
So it does not matter which oil is used (as long as it meets the manufacturer's specifications); what matters is that revitalizant has been added to it.
What is the after-effect of using revitalizant?
After revitalizant has been used, surfaces will not wear for a long time under normal operation of the car.
And if a small scratch appears on a cylinder wall, it will disappear thanks to revitalizant's unique restorative properties. The scratch will “heal”!
How long does the effect of revitalizant last?
Experience with revitalizant shows that the protective coating remains even after 100,000 km. After that, it makes sense to repeat the revitalization cycle.
To keep the surfaces' restoring potential at the highest level, it is recommended to use XADO Atomic Oil with atomic revitalizant, or Atomic Metal Conditioner with revitalizant, at every oil change.
Where do the fuel savings come from?
For high-mileage cars, fuel savings come primarily from compensating engine wear and restoring its operating parameters to their original values.
On a new engine, optimised mating surfaces and lower friction losses will help reduce costs in the future.
A service check found high exhaust emissions. Will revitalizant help?
Higher emissions of harmful substances can be related to fuel quality and to the adjustment and operation of the fuel system. But the most common cause of increased emissions is engine wear. In that case revitalizant will definitely help.
Using revitalizant reduces emission figures tenfold, and some parameters a hundredfold.
How can I feel the effect of revitalizant in my car?
The driver will feel more engine power and better throttle response, and will notice a change in the engine sound in different modes. The improvement is noticeable after only 50–100 km (30–60 miles) of driving after applying the product.
These improvements are the result of revitalizant's restorative action: it increases and evens out compression in the cylinders.

Use and oil
When to start, which oil, flushing, motorcycles
When is the best time to start using revitalizant?
Revitalizant is effective at any stage of a car's life and is always useful. The most important thing is that the unit is in working order. Ideally, revitalizant should be used from the running-in period.
We believe that now that revitalizant has been discovered, using it in the first factory fill is simply essential. It brings undeniable benefits from the first minutes of running in an engine or transmission: parts bed in more gently, with less metal lost to swarf, as most of it returns to the modified coating.
From then on the engine hardly wears at all and runs like new: it does not lose power, its characteristics do not deteriorate, and it lasts longer.
In fact, it is an oversight that now that revitalizant has been discovered, a substance with such unique properties is not added to the oil when engines are assembled at the factory.
Manufacturers only recommend changing the oil at service. Where does revitalizant come in?
It is well known that engine oil gradually loses its properties in service and must be changed. The car manufacturer's oil-change recommendation is beyond doubt.
But few people realise that together with the used oil and the wear particles, part of the engine is drained away too. As a result, after 15–20 oil changes the engine has to be replaced or overhauled.
Yet you can do more than follow the recommendations and change the oil regularly: you can also return worn metal particles to where they belong, thanks to revitalizant. With the discovery of revitalizant, the phrase “Metal can be healed!” has come true.
Which oil is better for treatment: old or new, synthetic or mineral?
Revitalizant is compatible with all types of oil. It does not react chemically with them and does not change their viscosity, physico-chemical or performance properties. The oil only carries revitalizant to the friction surfaces.
Complex products with revitalizant, such as RED BOOSTER and ATOMEX Complex Oil Treatment, also contain an additive package. They can change oil viscosity: this is the effect of the additives, not of revitalizant.
Note that used oil contains a lot of metallic wear products, so it makes sense to apply revitalizant to the old oil before changing it, for example together with RED FLUSH. This makes it possible to return part of the worn metal to the friction surfaces.
Can RED BOOSTER and ATOMEX Complex Oil Treatment be used together? From support chat
We do not recommend using them at the same time. Both products change oil viscosity, but in different ways: ATOMEX Complex Oil Treatment raises it by one SAE grade (for example, 5W-40 → 5W-50), while RED BOOSTER keeps viscosity near the upper limit of the same grade and slows its drop until the next oil change.
Do not deviate from the equipment manufacturer's recommendations on oil type and viscosity. Excess viscosity can lead to local overheating and oil starvation at high revs.
How does the RED FLUSH oil system flush with revitalizant work?
In addition to the usual gentle cleaning of the engine oil system before an oil change, RED FLUSH with revitalizant has a powerful restoring effect.
Even in a short time, 150–200 km of driving on oil with the flush, revitalizant captures the finest metal wear particles from the oil and returns them to the surfaces they were worn from.
This conclusion can be drawn by measuring the concentration of metal wear particles in the used oil before RED FLUSH and after it, just before the oil change.
I am the second owner and don't know what oil was used in the engine. Can I use XADO?
Even if some additives were added to the engine before, they will not significantly affect the action of revitalizant.
Does the additive settle at the bottom of the oil pan and lose its effect if the car is not used for a long time?
No, revitalizant does not settle. After revitalizant is added, the engine should idle for 2–5 minutes. During this time revitalizant fully dissolves in the oil, even if the machine has not been used for a long time.
Can I add revitalizant to the power steering if it already contains another additive? From support chat
Revitalizant does not react chemically with oil or additives. But in power steering it is added only to fresh fluid: the pump vanes wear quickly in contaminated fluid.
First replace the fluid, several times if necessary, until it is clear. Then add XADO EX120 revitalizant for power steering and hydraulics.
My scooter has a separate lubrication system. Where should I add the gel: to the oil or the fuel?
A special gel is made for motorcycles and other powersports vehicles.
When treating a four-stroke engine, revitalizant is added directly to the engine lubrication system.
Scooters with two-stroke engines can have a separate or a mixed lubrication system. With a separate system, revitalizant is added to the scooter's oil tank. With a mixed system, revitalizant is mixed with a small amount of oil and then added directly to the fuel tank.
Topic 04·10 questions
Engine
Parts, filter, honing, diesel, turbo
Which engine parts does revitalizant restore?
First of all, the surfaces of friction pairs most subject to wear: cylinder walls and piston rings, camshaft lobes and followers (rocker arms, hydraulic lifters), timing-drive parts: chain and tensioners/guides.
To a much lesser extent, the plain bearings of the crankshaft and timing drive. Because of the lubrication conditions there, revitalizant works only at start-up or shutdown, when the oil film is not thick enough.
Is there a risk of scuffing part surfaces when using revitalizant?
No, scuffing does not occur. Revitalization is a self-regulating process that requires friction between surfaces.
As surface roughness decreases and the coating forms, friction drops sharply and the growth of the surface stops.
Can revitalizant clog the oil filter?
No. Revitalizant dissolves completely in the oil and spreads through the system. Its particles are much smaller than the filter openings and pass easily through mesh filter elements.
Revitalizant particles pass freely through the mesh of the oil filter element.
What happens to the cylinder honing when revitalizant is used?
Honing is there for relatively safe bedding-in of cylinder-piston group parts and for holding oil on the cylinder walls.
Revitalizant modifies the honing in the most loaded zone, near top dead centre, and leaves it unchanged in the unloaded zones.
Honing is modified in the zones of most intensive bedding-in and remains unchanged in the rest of the liner.
My engine has NANOSLIDE, Alusil or Nikasil coated cylinders. Can I use revitalizant?
It depends on whether there is iron in the cylinder wall. Revitalizant works best on iron-based surfaces: steel and cast iron.
- Cast iron liners. The main case: revitalizant works first of all in the most loaded zones, near top dead centre and where the piston skirt presses against the wall.
- NANOSLIDE and PTWA. This is a layer of sprayed steel on an aluminium block. We have not carried out certified tests of revitalizant on such coatings, so use is at your own risk.
- Nitrided and chrome-plated liners of heavy diesels and special machinery. Under the working layer there is steel or cast iron, so revitalizant is especially useful once the layer has started to wear.
- Alusil, Lokasil, Silitec and Nikasil. There is no iron in the cylinder wall, and the wall itself is hardly modified. The metal-ceramic layer forms on the steel and cast iron piston rings, and small wall defects can be filled with iron from the rings and wear products in the oil. This is prevention and ring protection, not restoration of the wall.
Revitalizant will not replace repair if a thin coating (NANOSLIDE, Nikasil, about 0.1 mm) is worn through to the aluminium or is peeling, or if on Alusil aluminium is already smearing onto the piston. Revitalizant will not hold a peeling coating, and its fragments act as an abrasive: the block needs repair or sleeving.
There are no measurements on such coatings on this site yet: the measurements relate to 40Kh steel, grey cast irons and bronze. Inspect the cylinders before use: how to do it.
How do I check coated cylinders before using revitalizant?
Inspect the cylinders with an endoscope through the spark plug holes. The goal is to tell wear within the coating, where revitalizant can be used, from coating failure, where repair is needed. On NANOSLIDE and PTWA, use is at your own risk in any case: no tests have been carried out on such coatings.
Acceptable, revitalizant can be used:
- single thin vertical scratches with even edges, whose bottom is the same colour as the coating;
- smooth polished tracks where the piston skirt runs, without smeared metal or signs of overheating;
- on cast iron liners, worn-off honing (a "mirror") near top dead centre.
Repair is needed, revitalizant will not help:
- light matte spots or stripes on a dark steel coating: it is worn through to the aluminium;
- areas with ragged stepped edges, blisters, a network of cracks: the coating is peeling;
- on Alusil, wide grooves with smears of light metal: aluminium is sticking to the piston;
- on Nikasil, dark pits and blisters near top dead centre: the coating is destroyed, for example by high-sulphur fuel.
Also look at the piston crown. If its edge is washed clean of carbon down to the metal, first check the injectors and whether coolant is getting into the cylinder: fuel or coolant washes the oil film off the walls, and until the cause is fixed no additive will protect against scuffing.
Will revitalizant help with high oil consumption?
High oil consumption has various causes: wear of cylinder-piston group parts, stuck or broken piston rings, damaged valve stem seals or oil leaks through seals. If the cause is wear, revitalizant will work.
My engine smokes. Will revitalizant help? From support chat
First find the cause. Most often oil enters the combustion chamber past the piston rings or the valve stem seals. Smoke can also come from a worn turbocharger.
A simple check: if it smokes most under load, the cause is usually the rings; if on start-up after standing, the valve stem seals.
No chemistry will restore valve stem seals or a worn turbocharger: they need repair. If the rings are stuck, decarbonize first, for example with XADO RED ANTICARBON through the spark plug holes as instructed. If the cause is wear of the cylinder-piston group, revitalizant will help.
Should a diesel engine and its fuel system be treated separately or at the same time?
The fuel injection system is one of the most expensive components of a modern diesel engine. Its high-precision mating parts, the plunger pair of the high-pressure fuel pump and the needle and nozzle pair of the injector, wear heavily when poor-quality or contaminated fuel is used. Revitalizant for fuel systems can not only protect but also restore the surfaces of the plunger and barrel pairs in the pump and the needle and nozzle pairs in the injector.
Experience with revitalizant shows that it is better to treat a diesel engine and its fuel system at the same time. This not only improves the engine, increasing its power, but also improves the high-pressure pump: fuel pressure rises and injection improves, which gives a stronger effect and saves fuel.
How does revitalizant affect the turbocharger?
Revitalizant protects the turbocharger and extends its service life.
The turbo's plain bearings are lubricated by a relatively thick oil film (a hydrodynamic wedge) in almost all operating modes. Most bearing wear happens at start-up and shutdown, when this film is disrupted. It is at this moment of greatest wear that revitalizant comes into full action, forming a protective coating on the bearings.
Topic 05·5 questions
Transmission
Manual, automatic, robotised, CVT
If the gearbox is noisy, will revitalizant help?
There are two main reasons for a noisy gearbox. A hum can build up gradually, as gear teeth, bearings and shafts wear. In such cases revitalizant always helps.
Sometimes, however, a gearbox hums from the very start because of a manufacturing defect: the gear teeth do not mesh properly or sit too tightly. Revitalizant will work in this case too, but if the defects are significant, the noise may not go away.
What does revitalizant restore and protect in a manual gearbox?
First of all, the helical gears: revitalizant restores the tooth surfaces and so reduces hum and vibration. Noise goes down and shaft bearings last longer thanks to its action on their raceways.
Another group is the synchronisers, the parts responsible for smooth gear changes. They are made of soft alloys. Revitalizant effectively protects their metal contact surfaces. As a result, gears engage more easily and the “crunch” when shifting disappears.
Which product should be used for robotised gearboxes?
Robotised gearboxes and dual-clutch gearboxes are advanced manual gearboxes. Revitalizant for gearboxes and reducers is recommended for treating them.
My automatic gearbox jerks. Will revitalizant help?
Jerks, jolts and delays when an automatic gearbox shifts are often caused by wear. Revitalizant acts on the key units of an automatic transmission: planetary gears, shaft bearings and valve body valves. It restores worn metal surfaces, reduces internal pressure losses, stabilises the unit and ensures smooth, quiet shifting.
Revitalizant does not affect the friction packs, clutches and brakes (contact pairs of steel discs and discs with non-metallic linings): there are no conditions for it to act there.
My CVT hesitates when accelerating and goes into limp mode. Can revitalizant help?
One of the causes of jerks, vibration, slipping and noise in a belt-type CVT when accelerating is wear. Revitalizant acts directly on the working surfaces of the pulleys, chain or belt, bearings and shafts, eliminates micro-damage, stabilises torque transmission and makes the CVT run smoothly and quietly.

Electric cars and hybrids
Reduction gears and hybrid layouts
Which XADO products are suitable for an electric car?
Electric car reduction gears, Tesla's in particular, work in much harsher conditions than the transmission of a car with an internal combustion engine. Maximum torque is available at once from a standstill, and the gear surfaces in the reducer take significant peak loads. This shortens the reducer's life and leads to early replacement.
Using revitalizant for gearboxes and reducers in an electric car's reducer is simply vital. It will not change the nature of the loads on the reducer, but the metal-ceramic coating will reliably protect it and extend its life.
What can you offer for hybrids?
The internal combustion engine of a hybrid often runs on short trips and without warming up properly. Moisture builds up in the oil, an emulsion forms, and the oil's lubricating properties decline. Revitalizant solves this common hybrid problem while also improving overall fuel economy.
It is important to understand that in hybrids revitalizant works only in mechanical units with metal-to-metal contact and does not affect the electronics or the battery.
The engine and transmission of hybrids can interact with the electric part in various combinations, and all of them can be revitalized:
Series hybrid
Series Hybrid / Range ExtenderLayout: The electric motor always drives the wheels. The engine works only as a generator to charge the battery.
Revitalizant protects the electric drive reducer, the bearings and the engine-generator, reducing noise, vibration and wear under constant operation.
Parallel hybrid
Parallel / Mild HybridLayout: The engine and the electric motor drive the wheels together or separately through a shared transmission.
Revitalizant compensates for wear from frequent Start-Stop starts, ensures smoother gear changes and a longer life of the units.
Series-parallel hybrid
Series-Parallel / Hybrid Synergy DriveLayout: Can run on electric power or with direct drive from the engine. Combines the series and parallel layouts.
Revitalizant is effective for the planetary gear set, shafts and bearings, reduces the load on the transmission and keeps the hybrid system running quietly and steadily.

Products and safety
Bearing greases, the RF mark, GEN generations, approvals
A bearing is humming. Which revitalizant should I use?
To choose the right grease with revitalizant, you need to assess how worn the bearing unit is.
Protective grease
Used in new units and units with minor wear; a universal replacement for any grease.
Protective-restorative grease
Contains more active components, so it not only protects the part surface but also restores wear.
Repair grease
Used in units with wear of up to 80%.
What does the RF mark mean?
The revitalization factor (RF) is a measure of how effectively a product restores and protects against wear.
The product has the strongest restoring and repair properties. After it is used, the surface is fully protected from wear for a long time. Repeating the treatment is recommended after no more than 100,000 km.
The product is intended for partial revitalization and protection against ongoing wear.
How do GEN1, GEN2, GEN3 and GEN3+ revitalizants differ?
The generation shows how many treatment stages full revitalization (RF 100) needs and how fast it proceeds.
First generation
The XADO repair and restoration compound. Reaching RF 100 takes 3 or more treatment stages, and revitalization is slow: over 5,000 km.
Reinforced revitalizant
An updated formula. Three treatment stages are enough for full RF 100 revitalization, and it is fast: 2,000–3,000 km. The EX120 line.
The most advanced revitalizant
Single-stage treatment to RF 100, protection for 100,000 km. Revitalization is fast: within 2,000 km. The 1 Stage line.
Complex product
A 3rd generation revitalizant combined with a metal conditioner. The top AMC Maximum products.
Is revitalizant safe for health and the environment?
Yes, it is. All products have sanitary approval for use in the food industry and are hygienically certified.

Documents and support
Composition, documents, limitations, consultation
Why isn't the composition disclosed?
The formulation is a confidential development. But many properties can be checked without it: friction, roughness, microhardness, part dimensions, the composition of the surface layer. Such measurements are collected in the tabs of the interactive model.
Where can I see documents and measurements?
Measurements, test conditions and limitations are collected in the “Research and documents” section and in the tabs of the interactive model. Product descriptions and documents are on xado.com.
Is there data for my material or factory coating?
The measurements in the tabs of the interactive model refer to 40Kh steel, grey cast irons and bronze.
There are no measurements on this page for factory cylinder coatings; how revitalizant works on different coatings is described in the question about cylinder coatings. There is no data for non-metallic pairs or plastic and metal pairs either. That means compatibility has not been confirmed, not that it has been proven or disproven. Ask XADO support whether there are tests for your case.
Where won't revitalizant help?
- Where there is no metal-on-metal friction: non-metallic pairs, friction linings, electrical contacts.
- Where a unit is faulty or seriously damaged: it needs repair.
- Where the fuel system or sensors need cleaning: that is a job for other products.
What should I prepare for a technical consultation?
The more precise the data, the more precise the answer:
- the unit, make and model of the machine;
- the material or coating of the parts, if known;
- the standard oil or grease and its specification;
- the condition of the unit, symptoms, repair history;
- which products have already been used;
- what you want to achieve.
Photos of the unit help; there is no need to send documents with personal data.
Can revitalizant be selected remotely, by VIN or description? From support chat
A VIN and a description tell the model and factory fluids, but not the condition of the unit. Especially when mileage is high and it is unknown what repairs were made.
Remotely we can suggest an option that will certainly do no harm, for example XADO 1 Stage for engine prevention. An exact recommendation is possible after diagnostics.
We run industrial equipment. Where do we start?
Experience with real equipment is on industry.xado.com. Before a pilot application, record the initial condition of the unit (vibration, temperature, wear, oil analysis) so the result can later be compared on the same indicators.
Where can I buy it?
XADO dealer shops and XADO on Amazon are listed by country in the catalog. If the item you need is not available, the seller will pick a revitalizant product for the same unit and RF level. If your country is not on the list, you can ask us there. For industrial equipment, see industry.xado.com.
Is the animation on the home page filmed under a microscope?
No. It is an illustration based on the developer's model: sizes, load, temperature and pace are arbitrary, and the scene does not calculate the properties of a real unit.
Real images are in the answers to “What is revitalizant?” and “What is the metal-ceramic coating?”.
Sources and limitations
¹ Coating thickness and the depth of gradient diffusion depend on the design of the specific unit and its operating conditions, the materials of the friction pair (steel, cast iron, aluminium alloys, etc.), the initial wear, the operating conditions during and after treatment, the revitalizant dosage and the number of repeat treatments.
Another question?
Didn't find an answer?
Product selection and advice come from XADO. Experience with industrial equipment is on industry.xado.com.
